Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A non-functioning traffic light at the intersection of Avenida 115, also known as Petempich, and Avenida Solidaridad is causing major traffic backups in Playa del Carmen, with drivers complaining that transit officers are doing little to ease the gridlock.
The signal has been out of service, and municipal transit officers placed cones at the crossing, preventing vehicles from proceeding. Motorists are being forced to detour down to 28 de julio avenue, creating frustration among those caught in the delays.
Drivers and motorcyclists argued that when traffic lights fail, officers should direct traffic at the intersection rather than closing it off. José Antonio García, a motorcyclist, said a series of power outages from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) on Monday night may have caused the malfunction. ‘Transit officers should be directing traffic to guarantee road safety, not forcing people to go around and lose time,’ he said.
