Mérida, Yucatán — Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada announced that breathalyzers will be installed at multiple points in the city’s Historic Center starting this Wednesday through August 31 as part of the municipal police’s Safe Summer Operation.
The initiative aims to safeguard the well-being of visitors and local families during the vacation season. Patrón Laviada emphasized that the Historic Center is one of the most frequented areas during this period, necessitating heightened security measures.
Expanded Police Presence and Resources
The operation will include a significant deployment of riot control trucks, patrol cars, ATVs, electric vehicles, and motorcycle squads conducting continuous patrols. Additionally, 12 new units provided by the State Public Security Secretariat will bolster municipal efforts, reflecting close coordination between state and local authorities.
Surveillance will also be reinforced at bus terminals, urban transit stops, markets, parks, tourist zones, bars, religious celebration sites, shopping centers, banks, and other high-traffic locations.
Emergency Response and Recognition
The mayor highlighted the availability of 10 Safe Alert buttons throughout the Historic Center, enabling residents and visitors to report emergencies or request police assistance 24/7.
During the announcement, Patrón Laviada recognized municipal paramedic Freddy Cih Castillo for his timely assistance in delivering a baby last Saturday at a property on Calle 62 between 69 and 71 in downtown Mérida.
“It is a point of pride for our department and the entire City Council to have well-trained personnel who serve citizens with commitment and responsibility, contributing to a safer and more humane Mérida,” she stated.
The mayor was accompanied by Municipal Police Director Rafael Chairez Cuevas during the presentation of the Safe Summer Operation.
