Cozumel’s Blood Banks Face Critical Donor Shortage

Cozumel, QRoo — Blood donation on the island of Cozumel is facing a notable decline, according to Dr. Lourdes Cabrera Maldonado, the head of the IMSS Bienestar blood collection center. Currently, only one blood bank remains active on the island, while other blood collection points have closed due to a lack of interest from citizens.

Dr. Cabrera Maldonado explained that a blood collection point is a location where blood is collected from donors and should not be confused with a blood bank. She highlighted that myths, misinformation, and fear hinder the recruitment of donors, although a list of altruistic individuals who collaborate periodically does exist.

The specialist noted that a single unit of blood can save up to three lives, but because blood has an expiration date, it is necessary to continuously recruit new donors. She added that, in accordance with the General Health Law, blood itself has no cost for patients, though charges for processing and analysis may be generated, which do not constitute a charge for the blood itself.

The IMSS is calling on the population of Cozumel to participate in blood donation and support those in need of transfusions.
