Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz met with the newly appointed Port Captain, Yuliana Guadalupe Velázquez González, to establish measures aimed at regulating nautical and fishing operations while enhancing safety for fishermen and visitors.

New Regulations for Fishermen’s Pier

The meeting focused on drafting a formal regulation for the Fishermen’s Pier to monitor vessels, enforce safety protocols, and establish operating hours. Mayor Tziu Muñoz emphasized that these rules would improve oversight, prevent accidents, and streamline operations.

A key proposal includes constructing a monitoring booth at the pier’s entrance to ensure compliance, particularly during peak vacation seasons when nautical traffic increases.

Strengthening Coordination with Navy

The mayor highlighted improved collaboration with Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), which oversees the Port Captaincy, for joint efforts in seasonal surveillance and sargassum mitigation.

“It is encouraging to see Semar’s willingness to work with the municipality on issues critical to fishing and tourism, both vital to Puerto Morelos’ growth,” Tziu Muñoz stated.

The measures aim to balance economic activity with public safety while supporting the region’s maritime industries.
