Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez Municipality is calling on the general public to join a cleanup of the Tajamar Boardwalk this Saturday, January 10, starting at 8:00 a.m. The initiative aims to restore the area to optimal conditions following the significant amount of waste left after the Christmas Village event, which was open for 30 days and attracted between one thousand to two thousand daily visitors on average, in addition to the eight thousand people who attended the New Year’s Eve celebration to welcome 2026.
Berenice Sosa, Municipal Secretary of Well-being, noted that as of January 7, personnel from the Benito Juárez Municipality began dismantling the infrastructure used for the Christmas Village, which was visited by thousands of people during the holiday season. However, as in any site where massive events take place, a large amount of garbage was left behind, including cigarette butts and microplastics, generated by the visitors themselves.
“We ask residents to participate, supporting this macro cleanup, which will take place next Saturday, January 10, starting at 8:00 a.m., with the objective of leaving this naturally protected area in excellent condition,” Sosa stated.
Therefore, in collaboration with the Municipal Directorate of Ecology, Municipal Public Services, and Siresol, a thorough cleaning session will be conducted. Volunteers are requested to arrive at 7:30 a.m., bringing comfortable clothing, protective gloves, large black garbage bags, caps, and sunscreen to carry out the cleaning actions.
Sosa highlighted that another massive event for the carnival festivities will take place at this location in February, and the call to choose the kings and queens of the carnival is already active. The municipal official emphasized that commercially, the Christmas Village was a success, as out of a list of 380 entrepreneurs and artisans, only 100 participated.
“Since there are so many, they are selected to participate in the various events we carry out, and some others have a presence in the weekly bazaar set up at the Ultramar facilities in Puerto Juárez. While others will do so during the upcoming carnival festivities, in order to give everyone an opportunity,” Sosa added.
