Cancún, Mexico — Ana Paty Peralta, the mayor of Benito Juárez, has accused political opponents of spreading a "misinformation campaign" regarding the alleged intention of the municipal government to sell a property located at Playa Marlín.
Claims of Political Motives
Peralta made the statement during an interview following a public works event in Region 103. She asserted that the controversy stemmed from a "pre-lobbying act" and emphasized that no official decision or approval process had been initiated by the city council.
"The governments of the Fourth Transformation prioritize the interests of the people, and therefore, we do not promote the sale of public land," Peralta stated.
Environmental and Public Importance of Playa Marlín
The mayor highlighted the ecological and social significance of Playa Marlín, noting that the beach holds the prestigious "Blue Flag" certification and serves as a critical nesting site for sea turtles.
"The beaches belong to the people. Playa Marlín has a highly important public access point with 'Blue Flag' status. It also hosts one of the largest sea turtle nesting areas on this property," she explained.
Allegations of Political Exploitation
Peralta further alleged that the issue had been weaponized for political purposes to undermine her administration.
"Some have tried to use this information for political motives, to create controversy. It is completely false. I repeat: Playa Marlín is not for sale. An analysis of various properties was conducted, and someone mentioned this possibility, but no such sale is under consideration. We are evaluating different properties because we need more resources for public works," she concluded.
The mayor's remarks come amid heightened scrutiny over municipal land management, with critics questioning the transparency of potential property sales.
