Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Patients with mobility challenges participated in a therapeutic session on the beaches of Isla Mujeres, combining rehabilitation exercises with the unique sensory experience of sand and the Caribbean Sea. The activity was organized by the Municipal Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center (CRIM) in response to patients’ requests to incorporate the natural environment into their recovery process.
A Healing Experience by the Sea
The session took place at Playa Centro, where patients engaged in exercises designed to improve mobility while benefiting from the coastal setting. Walking on sand reduced joint impact, enhanced balance, and strengthened muscles, while the calming environment contributed to emotional well-being. Some participants used amphibious wheelchairs provided by the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone’s accessibility program.
The municipal government, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, coordinated the event through the local DIF (Integrated Family Development System) and CRIM, ensuring safety protocols and professional supervision. Jennifer Gómez Tamayo, CRIM coordinator, emphasized the initiative’s focus on dignity and inclusion: “With sensitivity and human care, the government facilitated transportation, access, and support for a joyful and therapeutic day.”
The activity underscored Isla Mujeres’ commitment to inclusive healthcare and community well-being. Authorities highlighted plans to continue similar programs, blending rehabilitation with the island’s natural resources.
