QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) has announced that the 20-peso bill will be pulled from circulation in the near future. The central bank has released the news that the 20-peso bills will be taken out of circulation shortly.
The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) reported that it will soon put a new family of banknotes into circulation, designed with advanced security technology to prevent counterfeiting and increase the durability of the paper currency. According to the institution, these improvements aim to reinforce trust in the financial system and guarantee that the bills maintain their quality and authenticity for a longer time, especially given daily use and the natural wear and tear they suffer.
What Will Happen to the 20-Peso Bills Still in Circulation?
The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) announced the gradual withdrawal of the 20-peso bills from the "F" family, which were the last to bear the image of Benito Juárez. This measure is part of the process of replacing old bills with new families that have greater security measures and durability.
Although these bills will continue to be valid and must be accepted as a means of payment, their availability will progressively decrease, making it increasingly less common to encounter them in everyday transactions.
In the official image released by Banxico regarding the new families of banknotes, no 20-peso bill was included, not even the tricolor design of the "G" family that celebrates National Independence. This reinforces the possibility that the 20-peso bill will be definitively replaced by coins in the future, as part of the modernization process of the Mexican monetary system.
Will a New 2,000-Peso Bill Be Issued?
Speculation about the issuance of a 2,000-peso bill has recirculated following the announcement of the renewal of the current families of Bank of Mexico (Banxico) banknotes. However, the institution has officially denied that there is any decision or authorization to put a new denomination of that value into circulation.
Since August 2024, various forums and financial media had mentioned the possible creation of this bill, which generated debate among analysts and users. In previous statements, Alejandro Díaz de León, former governor of Banxico, acknowledged that "it would be a mistake not to consider the possibility of a 2,000-peso bill" within a new family; however, he clarified that the Governing Board of the Bank of Mexico has not approved such a denomination.
The institution explained that the process of issuing banknotes is subject to technical and economic evaluations, so any information about a 2,000-peso bill is unfounded and not backed by official agreements.
