Tahmek, Yucatan — A giant decorative balloon honoring Yucatan caught fire and was completely destroyed moments before it was set to take flight at the Tahmek Balloon Festival, leaving organizers and spectators in shock.
The balloon, created by artisans from Guanajuato, stood about 12 meters tall. It was shaped like a mold and featured images of a Mayan goddess, a jaguar, and the pyramid of Chichen Itza, serving as a tribute to Yucatan for being invited to the festival.
Attendees watched in surprise and fear as flames engulfed the balloon while crews prepared for its launch.
The incident took place during the eighth International Paper Balloon Festival in Tahmek, an annual event that draws residents and visitors to see the construction and release of colorful balloons. The festival also features music, food, crafts, and family activities. This year’s edition was held on Saturday and Sunday and offered free admission.
