Cancún, Quintana Roo — The tranquility of the Supermanzana 70 district in Cancún was interrupted on Sunday afternoon following an armed attack on the base of the Leona Vicario taxi union, located on 16 Poniente Street, one block from José López Portillo Avenue. According to witnesses, two individuals on a motorcycle parked in front of the building and opened fire at least six times against the facade.
Panic Among Passengers and Workers
The site is used as a base for vans destined for Leona Vicario, so at the time of the attack there were taxi drivers and passengers waiting for transportation. The sound of the gunshots generated panic and confusion, leading those present to immediately request help by calling 911.
Initially, there was speculation about possible injuries; however, authorities confirmed that only material damage to the building was recorded, ruling out any victims after the violent event.
Response from Authorities
Municipal Police officers cordoned off the area within minutes, while forensic specialists from the State Attorney General's Office collected spent shell casings at the scene as part of the investigation. The building was placed under police guard to ensure the safety of workers and public transport users.
The motive for the attack is currently unknown. However, authorities have not ruled out that it may be linked to a possible extortion attempt. The assailants managed to escape towards Francisco I. Madero Avenue before the police arrived.
Law enforcement agencies maintain a search operation in the area to locate those responsible, while ministerial investigations continue into this event that has once again raised violence alarms in Cancún.
