Cancún, Mexico — A new case of harassment against a ride-hailing driver by traditional taxi operators was recorded Saturday night at Cancún International Airport. The incident, captured on video and shared on social media by the account “3rick,” involved a driver transporting a young Asian couple who believed they were being followed.

Confrontation at the Airport

The driver reported that two vehicles—a black private car and a white pickup truck—began tailing them after the passengers requested the ride-hailing service. According to his testimony, the vehicles attempted to block his exit from the airport, though he managed to evade them and continue toward the passengers’ hotel.

In the footage, a man wearing a pink shirt and beige shorts is seen obstructing the ride-hailing vehicle. The driver, visibly distressed, stated, “Good evening, we’re here at the airport. They’re not letting me leave. They’re cutting me off horribly. Several trucks have already blocked my path. I’m afraid they might do something to me. I’m with passengers who just wanted a ride to their hotel because the traditional taxis are charging too much.”

Repeated Harassment

The driver noted that this was not the first such incident and that a colleague had quit out of fear. During the confrontation, the taxi driver approached the window and warned, “I’ll let you go this time, but I don’t want to see you here again.” When the ride-hailing driver asked if he could operate with a federal permit, the taxi driver replied that he could—but only under that condition.

The tense standoff left the tourists shaken, fearing they might be kidnapped. Ride-hailing services such as Uber, Didi, and InDrive are not officially permitted to pick up passengers inside Cancún International Airport.
