Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — A local artisan in Puerto Morelos has publicly denounced ongoing harassment by a foreign resident following a verbal altercation that was captured on video. The incident, which occurred last Sunday, has sparked debate among residents over tensions between local vendors and foreign residents in the tourist-heavy area.
Conflict Over Parking Leads to Verbal Alteration
The artisan, identified as Santiago, operates a handicraft shop on Javier Rojo Gómez Avenue in Puerto Morelos’ tourist district. According to his account, a foreign woman parked her vehicle in front of his shop, obstructing visibility for potential customers. When Santiago asked how long she intended to stay, she reportedly responded dismissively, stating he had no authority to question her.
The woman left her vehicle parked for several hours before returning in the evening. Shortly afterward, a foreign man—allegedly her partner—confronted Santiago, accusing him of scratching the vehicle’s paint while it was parked near his shop. The exchange, recorded by Santiago’s security camera, shows the man shouting insults at the artisan.
Ongoing Harassment and Calls for Action
Santiago, who uses crutches due to mobility difficulties, claims the harassment has continued since the incident. He states the man repeatedly passes by his shop and hurls insults. Despite reporting the matter to local police, Santiago was advised to file a complaint with the Civic Court to seek mediation.
The artisan emphasized that he holds the necessary permits to operate his sidewalk stall legally. He also noted that many nearby restaurants similarly occupy public space for outdoor seating, with some streets even closed to vehicular traffic in the evenings.
Divided Public Reaction
The incident has drawn mixed reactions from the community. Some residents argue that street vendors often monopolize public spaces, making parking difficult. Others, however, criticize foreign residents for behaving arrogantly and disrespecting locals.
Santiago’s case highlights broader tensions in Quintana Roo’s tourist zones, where disputes over public space and gentrification have become increasingly common. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Santiago remains hopeful that municipal authorities will intervene to prevent further confrontations.
