Police chase and shootout after truck robbery in Cancún

Abandoned Chevrolet Suburban truck found in the Bonfil district of Cancún after a police chase

Cancún, Quintana Roo — An armed robbery registered in the Alfredo V. Bonfil delegation triggered a police chase and an exchange of gunfire during the early hours of Thursday, around 1:00 a.m., mobilizing various security corporations across several avenues of the city.

The first reports indicate that armed individuals robbed a person of a black Chevrolet Suburban truck and escaped in at least two vehicles. In addition to the stolen unit, the perpetrators were traveling in a white Cadillac truck, which managed to flee from the initial moments without being intercepted.

Through the video surveillance system, the Suburban was located circulating on Huayacán Avenue, near the State Attorney General’s Office. Municipal Police officers attempted to stop them; however, the occupants of the vehicle allegedly fired gunshots, which initiated a pursuit.

The tracking extended along avenues such as Huayacán, Chac-Mool extension, Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, and Rogelio Castorena. During the operation, personnel from the Municipal Police, State Police, Navy, the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (Geavig), as well as agents from the State Attorney General’s Office participated.

Upon entering a dirt road area near Rogelio Castorena Avenue, the suspects managed to evade the authorities. At that point, a municipal patrol that continued the pursuit left the road and suffered an accident, with no injuries reported from this incident.

After several minutes of searching, the Suburban truck was located abandoned in the Bonfil delegation, at the intersection of Luis Echeverría and Vicente Guerrero streets, near the dome of the Tecate neighborhood. The discovery was made with support from neighborhood reports and the review of video surveillance recordings.

During the inspection of the vehicle, long weapons and blood stains were found inside, suggesting that one of the occupants may have been injured during the confrontation. So far, no admissions of people injured by gunfire to city hospitals have been confirmed.

The perpetrators managed to flee, and no arrests have been reported. Investigations continue to clarify the events and locate those involved.
