Cancún, Mexico — An armed robbery at a McDonald’s restaurant in Cancún on Friday afternoon triggered a Code Red alert and a major police mobilization in the city’s Region 92.
The incident was reported through the 911 emergency number, prompting the immediate deployment of at least six patrol units from various security agencies to the fast-food chain’s location on José López Portillo Avenue, near Kabah Avenue and close to a bank branch.
At the scene, the victim told police officers that several armed individuals intercepted them in the parking lot, threatened them with firearms, and stole a large sum of cash estimated between 100,000 and 150,000 pesos.
The suspects fled the area on motorcycles in an unknown direction. Despite a search operation in the surrounding area and nearby roads, authorities have not located or detained the perpetrators.
Police cordoned off the area while gathering information and providing assistance to the victim, who suffered a severe nervous breakdown following the violent incident. Authorities have since begun procedures to open a formal investigation file.
Unofficial reports suggest the victim had previously withdrawn a considerable amount of cash with the intention of purchasing a used vehicle, which may have been exploited by the criminals to carry out the robbery. Authorities are not ruling out any line of investigation.
The case is being analyzed through both public and private surveillance cameras installed in the area to identify the responsible parties and establish their escape route. Investigators will also examine the alleged vehicle seller and analyze possible connections to individuals who may have had prior knowledge of the money movement, though no direct accusations have been made against any person or institution at this time.
