Xpujil, Campeche — A violent armed attack against workers protesting unpaid wages left one dead and another seriously injured in Xpujil, Campeche. The incident occurred along the Xpujil-Escárcega highway, where masked assailants opened fire on construction workers demanding overdue salaries.
Attack Details
The confrontation took place around 5:00 p.m. near kilometer 148, close to the López Mateos-Xpujil aqueduct. At least 10 employees of the construction company JAVA had gathered to protest unpaid wages when a silver-gray Nissan Sentra pulled up. Three masked individuals exited the vehicle and, without warning, began shooting at the demonstrators.
Carlos E., 21, was killed at the scene. Edward, 24, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his left calf, ankle, and arm, as well as facial injuries. He was initially treated at the IMSS Bienestar hospital in Xpujil before being transferred to a private clinic in Chetumal due to the severity of his condition.
Survivor’s Account
Edward, a Xpujil native, recounted the attack to authorities. He stated that the assailants did not speak before firing and that the violence appeared targeted. No arrests have been made, and the motive remains under investigation by the State Attorney General’s Office.
Authorities’ Response
As of now, no official statement has been released regarding the involvement of the construction company or measures to protect the affected workers. The case remains open, with no suspects identified or detained.
