Tulum, Mexico — Two rafts spotted off the coast of Tulum’s hotel zone early Friday morning initially sparked speculation about a potential migrant arrival, but authorities later confirmed the occupants were Argentine tourists training for a sporting event.

Confusion Over Rafts in Hotel Zone

The incident began around 7:00 a.m. when hotel staff at Kanan reported seeing two rafts—one blue and one pink—navigating near the shore. Local police responded to the scene, but neither the hotel employees nor initial responders knew the identity or purpose of the individuals on board.

After an investigation, Tulum’s Civil Protection Directorate determined the rafters were Argentine tourists staying at the Ahau Hotel. Officials stated the group was conducting aquatic training in preparation for a competition scheduled for Sunday in Akumal. No further details about the sporting event were provided.

Authorities Clarify No Migration Attempt Occurred

Sergio Ven Ángel Canto, Director General of Civil Protection and Fire Services in Tulum, confirmed coordination with Edgar Aguilar, Secretary of Citizen Security, to verify the situation. Authorities concluded the activity was recreational and not an unauthorized entry attempt.

“This was not a migrant arrival, as speculated on social media. The tourists posed no risk, but due to adverse weather conditions, they were advised to exercise caution and remove their vessels from the water,” Canto stated.

Civil Protection urged the public to verify information through official channels to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic.
