Mexico — Apple has officially announced that its AppleCare+ program in Mexico now includes, for the first time, protection against iPhone theft and loss. With this update, the company seeks to address one of the most frequent problems among users in the country: the loss or theft of mobile phones.

The technology firm had offered this type of coverage in other markets like Europe or the United States for years, but its arrival in Mexico occurs in a context where cell phone theft continues to increase and where the majority of users do not have any type of insurance to protect them.

According to figures from The CIU, the purchase of smartphones to replace stolen or lost devices practically doubled, rising from 4.7 percent to 9.2 percent between the beginning and end of 2024. Furthermore, only a small portion of cell phone owners (around 10 percent) purchase any type of protection policy.

The new AppleCare+ package has an approximate cost of 5,999 pesos and allows users to request an iPhone replacement in case of theft or loss. The benefit can be used up to two times per year, provided the "Find My iPhone" feature was activated on the affected device. Each incident includes a deductible of approximately 1,899 pesos.

To file a report, the user must log into iCloud, mark the device as lost, and begin the claims process. Once approved, Apple delivers a replacement device in a considerably short period, eliminating steps and procedures typical of traditional insurance policies.

With this expansion, the company reinforces its growth strategy in the services area, a segment that has gained special relevance for its global revenue. Theft protection, in a country where crime is recurrent, could improve consumer confidence and strengthen loyalty towards the brand.

The integration of the insurance within the Apple ecosystem also allows the company to control the entire experience, from reporting the incident to the delivery of the replacement, avoiding intermediaries and maintaining a closer relationship with the user.

However, the coverage does not apply to all models. Apple reported that this benefit is aimed primarily at the most recent versions of the iPhone, though it did not detail the complete list of compatible devices.

Specialists indicate that this type of protection could influence the purchasing decision of new users by reducing the financial risk associated with losing the device and by offering a more agile scheme than the policies available on the market.
