Cancún, Mexico — Cancún Mayor Ana Paty Peralta has unveiled a new digital platform designed to monitor flood-prone areas and provide safe evacuation routes during extreme weather events. The Sistema de Información para la Movilidad (SIMO) is a collaborative effort between the Municipal Institute of Urban Development Planning (IMPLAN) and the General Directorate of Civil Protection.

A Tool for Prevention and Safety

The platform will utilize historical rainfall data to identify high-risk flooding zones across the city. It will also feature real-time updates on road closures, temporary shelter locations, and designated evacuation routes for tourists based on their hotel accommodations.

“Technology and innovation are fundamental to our administration,” Mayor Peralta stated during the announcement. “We are taking firm steps forward, leveraging these planning tools to make better decisions and continue transforming our city.”

Peralta inspected the platform’s progress alongside key officials, including IMPLAN Director Héctor Sánchez Tirado, Transportation and Mobility Head Vanesa Valenzuela Morales, Municipal Transit Director Ezequiel Segovia Góngora, and Public Services Director Antonio de la Torre Chambé.

Real-Time Traffic Monitoring and Smart Routing

The system integrates with Cancún’s traffic light control center, enabling authorities to monitor signal functionality in real time and address malfunctions promptly. For the first time, the city will analyze actual traffic data to understand peak hours, vehicle density, and optimal routing.

An intelligent tracking system automatically updates information using multiple monitoring sources, ensuring minute-by-minute accuracy. The flood-risk module includes an interactive map highlighting over 90 vulnerable zones, categorized by severity. Users can also cross-reference routes with Google Maps for safer alternatives.

Emergency Preparedness Features

The platform will list 56 georeferenced temporary shelters, including a pet-friendly facility and designated evacuation sites for 96 hotels in the hotel zone. Each location will have pre-planned routes for guests and staff.

Héctor Sánchez Tirado explained that SIMO consists of three core modules: traffic analysis, real-time incident monitoring, and continuous urban mobility updates. The system aims to measure, understand, and improve transportation efficiency in Cancún.

The project involves coordinated efforts between IMPLAN, Civil Protection, Transportation and Roadway Management, and Municipal Transit to enhance urban mobility and risk prevention.
