Amigos de Sian Ka’an Brings Water Solutions to 30 Maya Communities

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Amigos de Sian Ka’an (ASK) has completed a water sustainability program that brought rainwater capture, storage, filtration and wastewater treatment systems to 30 indigenous communities in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The program, which ran from November 2024 to July 2026, involved the installation of 627 ecotechnologies — locally adapted systems designed to promote responsible water management — along with water quality monitoring efforts.

ASK Executive Director Rocío Moreno Mendoza said the systems captured 1,332,918 liters of rainwater and treated 4,739,340 liters of wastewater, easing pressure on the region’s water supply sources.

Community-Based Water Solutions

The initiative also included water quality studies in all 30 communities to generate data useful for protecting public health and ecosystems. In the Yucatan Peninsula, groundwater is the primary source of drinking water and supports a wide range of economic activities, making the preservation of its quality essential.

According to ASK, the ecotechnologies are adapted to local conditions and respond to pressures from population growth, changing consumption patterns and ecosystem transformation. The organization advocates for a sustainable management model that combines technology, good practices and community participation.
