Cancún, Mexico — A violent brawl involving alleged pirate taxi drivers erupted at a gas station along the heavily trafficked Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard in Cancún. The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday morning, caused traffic disruptions and alarmed nearby drivers and customers.
Chaos Erupts Over Territory Dispute
Witnesses stated that at least ten individuals engaged in a heated argument that quickly escalated into physical violence, including punches, shoves, kicks, and verbal threats. The altercation was allegedly sparked by disputes over passenger fares and territorial control.
Authorities from the Cancún Public Security Directorate responded to multiple citizen reports, but the individuals involved reportedly fled before being detained. No arrests or serious injuries have been confirmed.
Recurring Conflicts in Cancún
This incident is not isolated. In recent months, Cancún has seen repeated clashes involving unlicensed taxi drivers, particularly in high-traffic areas such as the International Airport. Earlier this year, a group of so-called “pirate taxi drivers” was recorded assaulting licensed transport operators at Terminal 3, prompting public outcry and demands for stronger enforcement.
The lack of effective regulation and the growing informal transport market have fueled ongoing conflicts between licensed taxi drivers, ride-hailing services, and unlicensed operators. The absence of consistent oversight has turned key areas of the city into battlegrounds for transport disputes.
Calls for Stronger Enforcement
Licensed taxi operators have urged municipal and state authorities to take decisive action. “We cannot allow these acts to become normalized. Today it was a gas station; tomorrow it could be a school or a shopping center,” one operator stated.
No further details regarding arrests or injuries have been released.
