Cancun — Residents, transporters, and drivers from the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos have expressed their discontent with alleged extortion practices and omissions attributed to officials of the Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute.
According to various citizen testimonies, a network of irregularities is alleged involving inspectors and delegates of the institution, who supposedly demand illegal payments to allow the operation of transport units.
Among those directly implicated are José Manuel N, delegate in Puerto Morelos, and David N, delegate in Playa del Carmen, who are accused of coordinating these actions along with operational personnel in Cancun. The complaints indicate that these activities would be carried out under the structure headed by the director general of the institute, Rafael Hernández Kotasek.
In the municipality of Puerto Morelos, the complaints also extend to Homero N, whom those affected link to the organization of operations aimed at collecting money.
The amounts reported by those affected vary depending on the type of vehicle and the alleged violation. It is mentioned that taxi drivers are asked for 700 pesos to pass inspections, while the fee for vehicle age issues rises to 3,500 pesos. The situation is even more critical for motorcycle taxi drivers in Playa del Carmen, who claim they have been required to pay up to 20,000 pesos per unit to be able to operate without problems.
Citizens have also expressed their discontent with the lack of control over irregular transportation and the deficiency in surveillance operations, blaming the institute's general management for the apparent lack of order in the streets.
Due to the seriousness of the accusations, which some sectors compare to organized crime schemes, the immediate intervention of state and municipal authorities has been requested, including the mayor of Puerto Morelos, Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, who is conspicuous by her absence.
