Alberto Perera Appointed Head of Quintana Roo Welfare Secretariat

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Alberto Ignacio Perera Medina has been appointed acting head of the state Welfare Secretariat, replacing Pablo Bustamante Beltrán, who resigned Monday.

Jaime Torres Gutiérrez will take over as director general of the Quintana Roo State Food Security Agency (ASAQROO), moving from his previous role as director of planning, regulatory improvement and archives at the agency.

The state government announced the appointments Tuesday, saying they would strengthen efforts to build “a humanist social policy, close to the people and aimed at reducing inequality gaps.”

Perera Medina has more than 15 years of public administration experience, specializing in the design, implementation and evaluation of social programs. He previously served as director general of ASAQROO and as undersecretary of human development for the state government. He also held various social development roles at the state and municipal levels.

He holds a law degree from the University of Quintana Roo and a master’s in tax law, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in education.

The government thanked Bustamante for his “work, commitment and dedication” during his tenure, saying he contributed to strengthening social policy and improving the quality of life for Quintana Roo families.

Bustamante resigned Monday in a letter to Governor Mara Lezama, citing personal and political reasons. Speculation suggests he may seek the mayoral candidacy for Benito Juárez in the upcoming election.
