Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Civil protection and firefighter crews responded Saturday morning to a report of an Africanized bee swarm at a street market in the Villas del Sol neighborhood, where the insects attacked vendors and shoppers.
The swarm was reported around 11 a.m. by vendors set up at Avenida Libramiento and Avenida CTM. Attempts to drive the bees away with smoke failed, prompting the vendors to call for help from municipal authorities.
Paramedics with the Rescue and Medical Emergencies Squad (ERUM) treated several people for bee stings, and two victims were rushed to a hospital for emergency care, officials said.
As a precaution, authorities relocated vendors to a safer area next to the Bodega Aurrerá supermarket, where the market continued under conditions considered safer for the public.
