Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Yair Córdova, representative of the organization Policultivo de la Diversidad Sexual, has urged authorities to implement essential services, mental health support, and comprehensive care for the LGBTQ population, particularly those in rural communities.
Vulnerable Conditions in Bacalar
Córdova highlighted that residents of rural areas in Bacalar face significant vulnerabilities due to the lack of basic services, access to medication, and psychological support.
"Unfortunately, there is a lack of awareness among municipal authorities, who only conduct health promotion activities near the municipal palace without considering that many people lack the resources to travel," Córdova stated. "Additionally, insensitivity has led to HIV testing being conducted in ways that expose individuals."
He explained that some people living with HIV in the community of Limones must travel to the state capital to obtain medication.
Demand for Psychological Services
Córdova emphasized the need to reinstate free psychological services previously offered at the Bacalar clinic, which were suspended due to budget constraints.
"It is crucial to reactivate psychological care, as there have been cases of suicide among young people who could not find a support network," he said.
The organization submitted a proposal to Health Jurisdiction No. 1 to secure funding through the Ramo 10 program to assist vulnerable groups, but the initiative remains stalled.
Persistent Challenges
Córdova stressed that systemic neglect and bureaucratic delays continue to hinder progress in addressing the needs of the LGBTQ community in southern Quintana Roo. Efforts to expand healthcare access and mental health services remain critical to reducing disparities in the region.
