Activists Block Akumal Road to Protest Detention of Cenote Defender ‘Juanito’

Residents block a road in Akumal with rocks and signs during a protest

Akumal, Quintana Roo — Pressure from residents led to the release of an activist known as “Juanito” after his arrest for alleged trespassing at the Balam Ha cenote in Tulum municipality.

The detention prompted residents to partially block access to the community for several hours using rocks, banners, and slogans like “Akumal is not for sale, it is defended.” They protested what they called an abuse of authority and defended their territory and natural resources.

Entire families participated in the mobilization, which remained peaceful but firm in demanding a review of the case and the release of the young man, identified as a promoter in the defense of cenotes.

Reports indicate Florentino Balam Tapia, also known as “Osi,” helped lead the protest. Residents removed the blockade once they confirmed Juanito had left the State Prosecutor’s Office facilities.

Traffic resumed in the area and the community mobilization ended after disrupting circulation on one of the access roads to Akumal.
