Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Derailments like the one involving the Interoceanic Train, which left 13 dead last weekend, could also occur with the Maya Train in the Yucatan Peninsula, stated José Urbina Bravo, a diver with the organization Sélvame del Tren.
In an interview, the activist known as “Pepe Tiburon” maintained that the Interoceanic Train tragedy was not just an accident but the consequence of carrying out works against scientific knowledge and expert advice.
The diver asserted that this will not be the only accident to be recorded, but that more are expected in the future, both in the Interoceanic Train system and in the Maya Train system.
He emphasized that the political decisions made by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador are not only costing millions of pesos and causing incalculable environmental damage, but now also lives.
The activist opined that arrogance and failure to heed warnings have brought about the first fatal consequences.
The interviewee said he hopes that, following this tragedy, the political party governing the country “shows a bit of common sense” and “stops fighting for political victories.”
He added that the current government’s actions should now be directed toward correcting these works to prevent more fatal accidents.
