A man who prompted a large-scale search operation after jumping into the sea in Cozumel has been found safe. Authorities are now contemplating possible actions against him due to the extensive resources deployed in response to his apparent disappearance.
The man had been reported missing after he jumped off a pier on the Cozumel coastline following a disagreement with his partner. This led to a comprehensive search operation involving Civil Protection, Public Security, the Navy, and various rescue teams, including divers and lifeguards.
The man later walked into a local Fire Department station to report that he was unharmed. He explained that after he jumped into the sea, the current carried him out and then back to shore. He then returned home and apologized for the search operation initiated on his behalf.
Cozumel authorities have confirmed the man is safe but are considering potential repercussions for the unnecessary mobilization of resources his actions caused. The man has been handed over to a civic judge who will determine the appropriate penalty. This could range from a fine or arrest to referral of the case to the Prosecutor's Office of Quintana Roo.
