According to the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI), Quintana Roo had the highest number of homicides in the Yucatan Peninsula in 2023. The region, particularly the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun), continues to struggle with a high rate of violent crime and challenges in prosecuting these cases.
INEGI's 2023 statistics show that Quintana Roo recorded 1,669 violent and accidental deaths. From January to June 2024, the state reported 26,942 alleged crimes, including 766 homicides.
In June 2024 alone, Quintana Roo documented 54 intentional homicides. In comparison, Campeche and Yucatan reported six and one homicide respectively.
High-profile incidents have continued into August, with a well-known public accountant and businessman murdered in Cancun on the 8th. The following day, the State Attorney General's Office announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the crime. There was also an armed attack in a Playa del Carmen barbershop and an attempted femicide in Cancun, both on August 8.
Despite the federal government's efforts, violence in Quintana Roo continues to rise, leaving the local community in a state of constant concern.
