The Craft Pavilion, located in Benito Juarez Park in Cozumel, is a vibrant hub for local artisans to display and sell their unique, handcrafted wares. The pavilion brings together a diverse range of craftspeople, offering them a platform to showcase their talents to both the local community and visiting tourists.
Karla Salazar Blanco, the Deputy Director of Economic Development on the island, highlighted the importance of the pavilion in providing a space for local artisans. These individuals often produce their high-quality goods from home, creating unique and innovative products that appeal to a broad audience, including tourists.
The pavilion represents a decade-long collaboration between the artisans and municipal authorities. It's strategically located within the park, close to the road and pedestrian zone, but without interfering with other traders in the area. According to Salazar Blanco, the pavilion brings a new vitality to Benito Juarez Park, attracting large crowds who come to admire, purchase, and appreciate the local talent on display.
The pavilion is open from Friday to Sunday, from 3 pm to 10 pm, hosting a total of 60 artisans. Many of these artisans create their crafts on-site, assuring visitors of the authenticity and handmade nature of their products, a requirement for participation in the collective.
Before securing a spot in the pavilion, each artisan must undergo a free vetting process, providing photographic evidence of their product's origins to ensure the uniqueness of their offerings. With an upcoming change in municipal administration, hopes are high that the new leadership will continue to support the pavilion, allowing artisans to maintain their presence and continue offering their unique creations.
