Quintana Roo, a popular tourist destination in Mexico, is reportedly the location for half of all cyber frauds related to vacation package purchases in the country. This alarming statistic was shared by Eduardo Paniagua Morales, an advisor to the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV).

Morales expressed concern over the lack of effective measures to combat this rampant crime. He revealed that the average rate of detected cyber frauds in vacation sales has alarmingly escalated. Previously, the rate was 250 frauds per hour, but it has now surged to between 300 and 500 frauds an hour. This figure further spikes during the peak vacation season.

According to Morales, criminals exploit the popularity of tourist hotspots such as Playa del Carmen, Cancún, Tulum, Bacalar, and Puerto Morelos to execute their scams. They employ a variety of deceptive tactics to lure unsuspecting tourists.

These tactics include presenting false offers with seemingly "unbelievable" prices during the vacation season. In other instances, they advertise packages at list price, but falsely claim to include complimentary tickets to parks, nightclubs, or tours. They also use social media platforms to further their fraudulent schemes.

To protect against such scams, Morales advises tourists to always purchase vacation packages from a reputable, registered travel agency. He also cautions against sharing banking information or sensitive personal data.
