Grupo Xcaret has yet to secure the necessary permits and environmental evaluations from the Yucatán Government for their proposed mega tourist project in the Mayan jungle near Santa Elena. This was confirmed by the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS).
Diana Pérez Jáuregui, the head of the SDS, emphasized that any company planning to undertake such a project must follow due process in line with current regulations. This includes an environmental impact assessment, urban development considerations, and obtaining municipal permits, among other requirements.
When questioned about Grupo Xcaret's progress in securing these permissions, Jáuregui revealed that no representative from the company has approached her office to initiate the necessary procedures or request information. She also noted that she is currently unaware of the specifics of the proposed tourist development near Santa Elena, meaning the administrative process has not yet begun.
Jáuregui pointed out that while Grupo Xcaret has begun processes with the Federation, they have not approached the local government. The Federation is responsible for assessing the potential impact of the project, from construction through to operation and eventual closure.
Grupo Xcaret's proposed project is a major tourist development in the Mayan jungle, near Santa Elena. It is set to include 9 hotels, tunnels and rivers 36 meters underground, a ground-level hotel, waterfalls, a cathedral, an amphitheater, and other amenities.
