Two public transport drivers in Cancún have had their licenses permanently revoked after being caught street racing. The incident occurred during the early hours of Friday morning, when residents observed two public transport vans, known as 'combis', racing at the intersection of Miguel Hidalgo Avenue, also known as Route 5, and the Tulum Avenue extension.
Footage shared on social media shows the drivers of the combis repeatedly accelerating, blatantly disregarding a red traffic light and a stop sign. Their reckless actions could have easily resulted in a serious road accident.
After the video was posted on social media, Rodrigo Alcazar, director general of the Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (IMOVEQROO), confirmed that the drivers involved had been identified and would have their licenses permanently suspended. Alcazar also shared photos showing that the combis had been impounded.
The incident sparked a wave of public outrage, with many residents expressing their frustration. Some comments reflected a sense of resignation, suggesting that such behavior was not uncommon in the city. "The only strange thing I see is that the taxi respected the traffic light, the rest is normal every day", one comment read. Other remarks included, "the combis which have become rolling funeral cars", and "this is not news, it's the daily bread of combis and buses".
The video of the combis racing, ignoring traffic lights and running red lights, was shared on social media, prompting a broad discussion about road safety in Cancún.
