The Secretariat of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo (SEMA) has concluded its Energy Efficiency Seminar for the Hotel Sector. This initiative, supported by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to foster sustainable growth in the hotel industry while conserving natural resources.

The pilot program includes a seminar and tailored technical assistance to address the specific training needs of the hotel industry. Over the course of a year, training will be provided, measures to save energy will be identified and monitored, and various funding sources will be explored to facilitate the transition for interested hotels.

The ultimate goal of the Energy Efficiency Pilot Program is for all state hotels to adopt a standard level of energy consumption in the future. This will lead to the creation of an efficiency label for hotels, allowing them to promote themselves as sustainable establishments that meet state standards.

SEMA's head, Óscar Rébora, emphasized the importance of the hotel industry's commitment to participating in such programs. Jointly promoting sustainable development policies and actions helps fulfill the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The training took place in June and July, with over 70 hotels and 96 individuals participating. Participants received a comprehensive energy assessment of their facilities and specific recommendations to improve their energy performance. SEMA remains committed to promoting sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact, working in partnership with institutions and international organizations to ensure a greener, more efficient future for the region's tourism sector.
