Cancún residents are celebrating the city's achievement in the 2024-2025 season, securing 47 "Blue Flag" distinctions. These awards are given to beaches, hotels, and vessels that meet 33 environmental and safety criteria, including environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and safety services.
The city's municipal president, Ana Paty Peralta, announced the achievement at a "Blue Flag" flag-raising ceremony in Cancún, alongside Governor Mara Lezama. The distinction reaffirms Cancún's position as a leading tourist destination in Mexico and Latin America. The success also translates into an improved quality of life for thousands of Cancún families.
Peralta emphasized the importance of continued promotion and collaboration with business owners to ensure more hotels achieve certification. She also acknowledged the hard work of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) and Public Services teams, who clean the public beach areas daily. Other contributing agencies include Ecology, Siresol, Tourist Police, and Civil Protection, all of which play a crucial role in environmental care.
"Cancún is undergoing a transformation, and we must consider how we can improve," Peralta said. "We need to generate less waste and be more conscious. We want to preserve these natural beauties for future generations."
Governor Lezama stressed that Cancún, which has connections with 124 cities worldwide, has a responsibility to protect its natural environment. The city's turquoise sea and white sand attract visitors from around the globe.
Joaquín Díaz Ríos, the executive director of the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) Mexico, reiterated that Cancún is the national capital of Blue Flag, with 80 percent of the country's blue flags. This makes the city and the state international leaders in Latin America for sustainable beaches.
Justo Román Miranda Rocha, the head of Zofemat, announced that Cancún has achieved the top national and international ranking for environmental labels and vessels with the "Blue Flag" award. This is due to the collaborative efforts with sector businessmen to maintain clean and spectacular beach areas.
Before the "Blue Flag" flags were raised at one of the honored hotels, Peralta received the "Blue Flag" certificate for Playa Delfines. This is one of the seven public sites with the same distinction, including Del Niño, Las Perlas, Chac Mool, Marlín, Ballenas, and Coral. Subsequently, symbolic awards were given to beach areas of accommodation centers and winning vessels.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the honorary president of the DIF Quintana Roo, Verónica Lezama Espinosa; the Secretary of Tourism in Benito Juárez, Juan Pablo Zulueta Razo; the director of Hotel Flamingo, Roberto Cintrón Gómez; the director of Cancun Sailing, Sergio Castro Mera; and representatives of the IX Naval Region, National Guard in Quintana Roo, and Capitanía de Puerto.
