The Tulum City Council's recent approval of a Trust to manage funds from the Environmental Sanitation Fee marks a significant milestone for the municipality. This decision represents a key step towards transparency and ensures the future sustainability of the region, regardless of political changes.
The establishment of this trust is a significant achievement, according to David Ortiz Mena, president of the Tulum Hotel Association. He credited the municipal president, Diego Castañón Trejo, for his commitment to transparent management and investment in Tulum's sustainability.
Ortiz Mena noted that previous administrations had resisted setting clear rules for transparently managing these resources, leading to legal disputes. However, Castañón Trejo advocated for the trust from the start of his term. Thanks to the diligent legal work of treasurer Vicente Aldape, the trust has been approved and is now in the final stages of being implemented with the bank.
Tulum is facing substantial sustainability challenges due to its rapid growth. Ortiz Mena stressed that effectively managing resources to address these issues is crucial for the region's viability in the medium and long term. "Our economy depends on our natural resources; if the region's image suffers, the entire local economy is at risk," he added.
The trust's establishment, which includes citizen participation and promotes sustainability, is a significant achievement. Ortiz Mena believes it should serve as a turning point for the region and a model for the country. However, he expressed disappointment that some city council members voted against it. "It's hard to believe there are those who oppose transparency and sustainability. The campaigns are over, and now it's time for everyone to work together for the benefit of Tulum," he concluded.
