The Hotel Plaza Tulum, a new addition to the tourism infrastructure of the Maya Train in Quintana Roo, is now 70% complete. This new hotel will feature 352 rooms, accommodating up to 704 guests, and will be staffed by a team of 200 employees. The construction has been ongoing since May under a provisional environmental permit that allows for land clearing and movement.
The Hotel Plaza Tulum will comprise two three-story towers housing the guest rooms and various facilities. An additional amenities building will feature two squares named "Mayan Steles" and "Aluxes", as well as a National Guard detachment. The hotel will also offer swimming pools and sun decks, a water mirror, spa and snack bar areas, a cafeteria, restrooms, and 392 parking spaces. Additional amenities include spaces for buses and bicycles, and a pergola for electric cars. The buildings will stand at a maximum height of 12 meters, adorned with ornaments that enhance the aesthetic and serve as surveillance points for the Jaguar Park, monitored by a 360-degree video surveillance system.
The construction covers a total area of over 135,000 square meters, with 48.3% being built on and the remaining 51.7% dedicated to green and conservation areas, as well as an archaeological site. The hotel will also feature a wastewater treatment plant and infrastructure for rainwater catchment, ensuring environmental sustainability. Water will be extracted from the aquifer at a depth of 17 meters, subject to a concession from the National Water Commission. The project, managed by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), also includes plans for a 10,529 square meter access area.
The hotel site has a residential use designation for up to 148 inhabitants or 37 homes per hectare, in addition to commercial activity. The Urban Development Program of the Tulum Population Center also allows for a touristy, residential hotel use with medium-high density. This allows for a maximum capacity of 538 homes or up to 1,345 rooms with 2,151 inhabitants, although only 352 rooms are currently planned.
Once completed, the project will span 540 linear meters and 30,952 square meters of construction, including the two three-story towers and the single-story amenities building, among other areas. The hotel will be located in a buffer zone of Polygon 2 for public use, with infrastructure and trails of the Jaguar Flora and Fauna Protection Area, covering a surface area of 47.
