Shocking Evictions Rock Tulum Hotels & Restaurants

A police vehicle parked on the side of a street with various cars lined up and a building with umbrellas shading outdoor tables in the background.

Tourists and employees were forcibly removed from four establishments in Tulum, including hotels and restaurants. The properties were then secured by Investigative Police Officers from the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in Property Crimes. The affected establishments include the Alumbra-Kitchen Table hotel, the Aku’um hotel, and the La Esquina and Kira’s Beach House restaurants. Over 100 people were employed to evacuate the premises, remove furniture, and install metal meshes. This left visitors bewildered and uncertain about their next steps. The evictions impacted both domestic and international tourists, as well as employees who were concerned about their livelihoods.

Employees claim that these investigations were conducted without prior warning, and they were forcibly removed without the chance to gather their belongings. Reports of lost personal items, such as cell phones, and missing business equipment have emerged. These establishments are situated on the Boca Paila highway, at kilometer 5 of Tulum's coastal zone.

The significant police presence, including units from the Municipal Police and National Guard, led to heavy traffic from kilometer 5.5 to 6 at the intersection of Kukulcán avenue and Costera. This road is a crucial link between the coastal area and the city center. The operation lasted around two hours, and despite complaints, no arrests were made.

In addition to the four properties mentioned, an eviction attempt was made at another restaurant, owned by the company iL’Guazzeto S.A de C.V, located on Tulum Avenue, at the corner of Beta Norte street in the Centro neighborhood. However, the actuary received a call from their superiors instructing them to cancel the procedure, reportedly due to contract non-compliance.

Consequently, the official announced that there were no guarantees to proceed, leading to their withdrawal. The company iL’Guazzeto S.A. de C.V., had rented a space for a restaurant, but sold its rights to a third party, Jaime Medina. Medina allegedly made changes without permission and stopped paying rent for the premises.
