Playa del Carmen Food Aid for 3,000 Families

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Municipal President Estefanía Mercado led the first distribution of food parcels from the new program "Playa Llena, Corazón Contento" (Full Plate, Happy Heart) on Tuesday. The initiative guarantees monthly food supplies for 3,000 families in Playa del Carmen, fulfilling a campaign promise to the city's most vulnerable sectors.

The event was held at the community dome in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood. Mayor Mercado assured attendees that the priority of her administration is to ensure no family in Playa del Carmen is left without food on their table.

"During the campaign, we said that never again would an elderly person have to choose between eating and buying their medicine. Today, we are fulfilling that. This program was born to give certainty and peace of mind to our people," Mercado stated to hundreds of beneficiaries.

A Municipal Effort with State and Federal Support

During the distribution of basic food basket items, the mayor emphasized that this program complements federal support initiatives promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum and state programs led by Governor Mara Lezama, all for the benefit of Quintana Roo families.

The program, funded entirely by the municipality, will provide monthly food parcels to 3,000 households, ensuring that mothers, fathers, and grandparents do not have to sacrifice nutrition to cover other essential expenses like medicine. Mercado added that each food box carries a message of support from a government that is close to the people and seeks to strengthen well-being and social justice in Playa del Carmen.

Social Justice in Action

The Secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation, Deyanira Martínez, also participated in the event. She highlighted that this support strengthens the city's families, noting that 25 percent of the beneficiaries are male heads of household.

"When a table is full, it also carries hope, and when a family is strengthened, the entire city is strengthened," Martínez pointed out.

A Government Close to the People

The Solidaridad City Council reaffirmed its commitment to governing with proximity and social justice through this act, recognizing the coordinated work of the cabinet and the support of the municipal DIF system, headed by its honorary president, Eduardo Asencio. City council members and other integral members of the Cabildo were also present.

The launch of "Playa Llena, Corazón Contento" marks a firm step in building a more supportive municipality, where food is conceived as a guaranteed right and not a privilege.
