Cancún — The civil association Vida y Familia (VIFAC Quintana Roo), in collaboration with the restaurant La Dolce Vita and Ms. Rocío González, is conducting a charitable initiative by selling the traditional dish throughout September. The goal is to sell more than one thousand chiles en nogada, accompanied by a complimentary beverage, for $500.00 pesos each; half of the money raised will be allocated to support pregnant women in vulnerable situations.

Goal to Assist at Least 300 Women This Year

Claudia Citlalli Hernández Bustamante, the director of the organization, indicated that last year 218 vulnerable women were assisted, and this year they aim to assist at least 300. This year marks the 40th anniversary of VIFAC Nacional and the 10th anniversary of VIFAC Quintana Roo. The primary mission is to attend to and train pregnant women in vulnerable states, to reduce the number of women in this situation, and to prepare them through work workshops, focusing on making them self-sustaining and providing emotional support, as prevention has been lacking.

VIFAC Expands in the State

"We have to work more on prevention. Currently, VIFAC Quintana Roo is growing with the Cancún group home in Ciudad de la Alegría, the connection point in Playa del Carmen, and the support center in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, which serves more than 80 Mayan communities," stated Hernández.

Mr. Juan José, a partner of La Dolce Vita, commented: "We will serve the Chiles en Nogada as a special dish from the 1st to the 30th of September, Monday through Sunday from 12 noon to 10 at night. Tickets for the chiles can be purchased directly at the VIFAC offices or at the restaurant."

For him and his partner Giovana Arroyo, continuing this tradition is a way to thank the community and help people; this would be the third year supporting VIFAC.

Chiles en Nogada with a Strong Pueblan Tradition

He also mentioned that the chiles are made with the recipe that Ms. Rocío Álvarez de González's mother taught her; the nogada sauce and cheese are sent by Ms. Rocío González directly from Teziutlán, Puebla.

Margarita Hernández, a close friend of Ms. Rocio Álvarez, reminisced about how Ms. Rocio wanted to help in something that would transcend beyond herself, and this is the best way.

Tickets are on sale at the Bazar Segundo Aire (Plaza Bonita). Phone: 998-8843393.
