Cancún, Mexico — A 24-year-old man from Playa del Carmen died Wednesday morning at the General Hospital of Cancún "Dr. Jesús Kumate Rodríguez" after several days in critical condition, according to the Quintana Roo Ministry of Health (SESA).
Patient Suffered Septic Shock
The patient, who had tested positive for mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), developed severe septic shock due to multiple underlying health complications, authorities confirmed.
Hospitalized since the previous Thursday, the young man received medical care under strict clinical and biosafety protocols in accordance with guidelines for infectious diseases. Despite efforts by medical staff, his condition worsened, and he passed away on the morning of July 16.
Six Confirmed Cases of Mpox in 2025
The state health department extended condolences to the victim’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to timely medical care, epidemiological surveillance, and public transparency.
Regarding mpox trends in the region, officials reported 195 cases and two deaths in 2022, followed by 52 cases and three fatalities in 2023. In 2024, there were 16 cases and one death. So far in 2025, six cases have been confirmed, including the death of the Playa del Carmen resident.
The Ministry of Health emphasized ongoing monitoring and preventive measures to curb further infections and reduce the disease’s impact.
