Cancún, Mexico — The Cancún International Airport (AIC), operated by Grupo Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR), is among 62 airports across Mexico set to undergo modernization this year as part of a six-year infrastructure plan, according to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).

A $134 Billion Peso Investment in Airport Infrastructure

The Mexican government, through the SICT, announced a coordinated investment of 134 billion pesos ($134 billion MXN) in airport infrastructure across 62 terminals between 2025 and 2030. ASUR has allocated 21 billion pesos for its five-year plan, with 4.493 billion pesos designated for 2025—a significant increase from the 2.624 billion pesos spent in 2024.

The SICT stated that this investment responds to an anticipated annual passenger growth rate of 4%, which would translate to an additional 32 million travelers nationwide by the end of the administration. Passenger traffic has already increased by 8% in 2025.

Public and Private Sector Contributions

Public investment, led by the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) and the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), will total 22.749 billion pesos over the six-year period, with 8.491 billion pesos allocated for 2025.

Private sector contributions from ASUR, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), and Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) will reach 102.587 billion pesos over the same period, including 20.936 billion pesos in 2025.

Cancún Airport’s Terminal 1 Renovation

A key project under ASUR’s five-year plan is the renovation of Terminal 1 at Cancún International Airport, expected to conclude by late 2026. The upgrades aim to enhance operational efficiency and accommodate sustained air traffic growth.

Currently, the airport can handle up to 12,000 passengers per hour. In 2024, total passenger traffic reached 30.4 million, including 20.1 million international and 10.2 million domestic travelers. By 2025, traffic rose to 32.8 million passengers, marking an 8% year-over-year increase.

Mixed Investment and Additional Airports

Mixed investment, involving Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA) and the Mexico City Airport Group (GATM), will total 7.179 billion pesos over six years, with 4.301 billion pesos allocated for 2025.

Other airports slated for modernization include Mexico City International Airport (AICM), Puerto Escondido, Tepic, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Monterrey.
