Cozumel, Mexico — A night of alarm unfolded this Sunday on the island of Cozumel after a 47-year-old man identified as William N. died after being shot during a security operation in the area known as "El Mexicano," near kilometer 4 of the transversal highway.
The incident occurred late Sunday when William allegedly made a sudden movement that armed officers patrolling the area interpreted as threatening. According to reports, he raised his arm abruptly, which authorities perceived as a sign of imminent danger, assuming he was carrying a weapon. This triggered a rapid response from security forces, who opened fire.
Despite receiving initial medical attention from paramedics at a private clinic and being transported alive to a local hospital, William succumbed to his injuries hours later.
The scene was quickly cordoned off by multiple agencies, including the Secretary of National Defense, the Secretary of the Navy, State Police, Municipal Police, and the State Attorney General's Office. The heavy military and police presence caused significant concern among nearby residents, who witnessed an intense exchange of gunfire—some of which was captured on video by bystanders.
The Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the incident, though it has not yet been publicly confirmed which agency fired the fatal shot. Official silence and the absence of a detailed timeline have fueled uncertainty, with demands growing for clarity regarding the use of force in an operation that ended in tragedy.
