Puerto Morelos Upgrades to 1,200 LED Streetlights for Safety

Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has inaugurated the "Puerto Morelos Brilla" program, which will install 1,200 LED streetlights across the municipality by the end of the year. The initiative aims to enhance public safety, reduce energy consumption, and advance sustainability efforts.

A Step Toward Modernization

During the program's launch, Mayor Tziu Muñoz emphasized the project's significance in addressing long-standing infrastructure deficiencies. "This program represents a firm step toward modernizing our public lighting system. We are responding to an urgent need with concrete solutions that translate into greater safety, efficiency, and savings for the municipality," she stated.

The mayor explained that the initiative stems from a commitment to improving residents' quality of life, particularly in areas where lighting has been inadequate for years. She acknowledged inherited challenges, including outdated infrastructure, and stressed that well-lit streets contribute to safer communities.

Energy Efficiency and Long-Term Benefits

The LED fixtures are expected to reduce electricity consumption by up to 60%, offering substantial cost savings for the municipality. With an estimated lifespan of 200,000 hours, the new lights will provide durable and efficient service.

Key areas slated for upgrades include Villas Morelos II, Tierra Nueva, La Fe, the federal highway bridge, and the delegations of Leona Vicario, Central Vallarta, and Delirios, where older OV-15 lamps are still in use.

Community and Government Collaboration

Leonel Salazar Trejo, Secretary of Public Services, highlighted the program's alignment with Puerto Morelos's growth. "We are working with planning and foresight to ensure Puerto Morelos has the infrastructure it deserves," he said.

Rocío Torres Ceja, a resident of Villas Morelos II, expressed gratitude for the initiative, calling it a response to a long-standing community demand. "Today, we see the change. We know challenges remain, but this progress gives us hope and confidence to keep working together," she said.

Future Expansion and Smart Technology

Luis Enrique Mas Kumul, Director of Public Lighting, confirmed that the new fixtures comply with Mexico's official standard NOM-031-ENER-2019. He also revealed plans for a potential second phase incorporating a telemanagement system, enabling real-time monitoring, scheduling, and fault detection for each light.

The program underscores the municipal government's commitment to delivering quality public services while promoting sustainable development.
