Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A violent altercation between two men near Playa Mamitas left one individual hospitalized with stab wounds and another in police custody, according to authorities from the Secretary of Citizen Security. The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday along Calle 28 in the Zona Federal Marítima.
Knife Attack Following Alcohol-Fueled Altercation
Initial reports indicate that the two men began fighting while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. During the confrontation, one of them pulled out a knife and stabbed the other in the rib area. Security guards in the area witnessed the scene and immediately alerted emergency services via 911.
The assailant attempted to flee after wounding the other man but was restrained by bystanders who had witnessed the brawl. They later handed him over to authorities. Minutes later, officers from the Tourist Police arrived to secure the suspect, who was taken into custody.
Meanwhile, paramedics provided first aid to the injured man before transporting him urgently to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical observation.
Investigation Underway
The exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, though unofficial sources suggest both individuals were intoxicated at the time. Authorities have not yet released the identities of either man or provided an update on the victim’s condition.
The detained suspect was turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, where his legal status will be determined in the coming hours. The case is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.
This incident has renewed calls to strengthen security in tourist areas, particularly during late-night hours, to prevent similar violent encounters.
