Playa del Carmen, Q. Roo — Small hoteliers from downtown Playa del Carmen presented an authentic proposal at Mexico’s Tianguis Turístico, aiming to differentiate the destination within the competitive national tourism landscape. Their participation in the event, held in Tijuana, sought to position a brand that is more accessible, community-driven, and rooted in local identity.

A Distinctive Tourism Model

Offner Arjona, president of the Association of Small Hotels in downtown Playa del Carmen, emphasized that the destination stands out for its walkable streets, proximity to the beach, and direct interaction between visitors and the local community.

“Unlike other destinations in Quintana Roo, everything here is within reach, and the experience is more real and human,” Arjona stated.

A delegation of five independent hoteliers joined the municipality’s promotional strategy, which featured an eye-catching booth that drew the attention of national and international tour operators. Their goal was to highlight the most authentic side of Playa del Carmen, contrasting with the large-scale tourist developments of the Mexican Caribbean.

Strengthening Local Identity

According to Arjona, such initiatives are crucial for reinforcing the destination’s identity and fostering partnerships that boost the local economy.

“We succeeded in showing that Playa del Carmen is not just about beaches and nightlife but also about community and genuine hospitality,” he said.

The participation in the Tianguis reflects the microhoteliers’ commitment to consolidating their offerings and attracting tourists who value local, accessible, and sustainable experiences.
