Cancún, Quintana Roo — In a joint operation involving the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office, the Mexican Navy, State Police, and authorities from Yucatán, a woman identified as Eloísa Isabel "N" was arrested in Mérida. She is considered a high-priority target in the state’s criminal database and is allegedly linked to aggravated extortion in the Costa Mujeres area, part of Isla Mujeres’ mainland zone.
Extortion Scheme Targeting Tourist Businesses
According to the investigation, Eloísa Isabel "N" is believed to be part of a criminal cell led by Uriel Alonso "N" and Hugo Zuriel "N," known as "Los Gemelos" (The Twins), both currently in pretrial detention. Authorities allege that since January 2024, the suspect, along with two male accomplices, threatened a victim into making weekly payments of $500. By August of the same year, the demanded amount reportedly increased to $1,250, with threats of murder if the victim refused to comply.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Following a formal complaint, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Kidnapping and Extortion Crimes secured an arrest warrant, which was executed by investigative agents in Mérida. After her detention, Eloísa Isabel "N" was transferred to Cancún, where she was placed before a judge and remanded to the Benito Juárez Social Reintegration Center to face legal proceedings.
The case underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to dismantle organized crime networks operating in Quintana Roo’s tourist zones.
