Quintana Roo, Mexico — The government of Quintana Roo, led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, and the Netherlands' Ambassador to Mexico, Wilfred Mohr, have reviewed a proposed investment for the construction of a Comprehensive Sanitation and Circular Economy Center. The project is currently under evaluation by a technical committee.
The center aims to integrate cutting-edge Dutch and Mexican technology to provide long-term solutions for sargassum management in northern Quintana Roo and wastewater treatment in Cancún's Hotel Zone. The initiative seeks to mitigate environmental and public health risks while fostering local economic growth and shared development.
Jacob Alexander Pielkenro, Executive Director of Dutch CleanTech, participated in the meeting to assess the region's challenges and opportunities firsthand. He also shared insights into the innovative technological approach that has positioned the Netherlands as a global leader in comprehensive water and ocean management solutions.
Governor Lezama emphasized that the meeting does not signify an immediate commitment but is part of a broader technical evaluation and international collaboration process. The state government has prioritized transparency and sustainability in advancing the project.
Óscar Rébora, Secretary of Ecology and Environment, outlined the project's scope, which includes comprehensive monitoring, management, collection, and transportation of sargassum. Additionally, it proposes the establishment of three wastewater treatment facilities in Cancún's Hotel Zone, biodigestion of sargassum, organic waste, and pruning materials, as well as the production and sale of biomethane (natural gas).
The Netherlands, recognized as a leader in water and marine management, has expressed confidence in Mexico and Quintana Roo. The proposed collaboration includes financing, design, construction, and operation by a Dutch consortium comprising Dutch CleanTech and Oceanus.
Governor Lezama highlighted that the project aligns with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, which seeks to promote collective prosperity through measures that reduce environmental and public health risks while stimulating local economic growth.
