Cancún Libraries Turn Into Classrooms During Teacher Strike

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Public libraries in Cancún are preparing to function as temporary classrooms for primary and secondary students following the announcement of a teacher strike scheduled for May 15. The work stoppage, organized by the Quintana Roo Central Struggle Committee, coincides with Mexico’s Teacher’s Day holiday and follows a two-month strike that ended in late April.

Libraries Step In Amid Strike Uncertainty

Library officials confirmed they are making arrangements to accommodate students in case classes are suspended. During the previous strike, some libraries, including the Erick Paolo Martínez Library in Cancún’s Region 96, provided educational support with the help of volunteer teachers.

Three libraries have been identified for this initiative:

• Dr. Enrique Barocio Barrios Library, located on Av. Chichén Itzá at He-Zaba Street, Sm 1
• Lic. Rosendo Leal Sánchez Library, situated in Sm 95 between 16 and 105, near the Sports Unit
• Lic. Erick Paolo Martínez Library, located in Supermanzana 96, Manzana 120, Lots 1 and 2, on Calle 129

All facilities operate Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
