Mérida, Yucatán — Following the announcement in Rome that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost would assume the role of Pope Leo XIV, the Archbishop of Yucatán, Gustavo Rodríguez Vega, stated that the clergy anticipates a leader with a genuine missionary vocation. The prelate suggested that the Catholic Church may enter a period of pastoral continuity, similar to the trajectory set by Pope Francis.
A Missionary Pope with Latin American Experience
Though born in Chicago, the new Pope spent much of his ministry in Peru. As a result, within the Latin American Church, there is confidence that Leo XIV will prioritize missions, evangelizing remote regions of the world.
Rodríguez Vega recalled, "Pope Francis had already told us that we are all missionaries, and hopefully, we will feel that way." Additionally, Leo XIV is the first Pope from the Augustinian order and the second to originate from the Americas. With a Spanish-speaking mother, the new pontiff is fluent in Spanish and has been widely regarded as a missionary in action.
A Pontificate Amid Global War and Crisis
Rodríguez Vega also emphasized the symbolic and practical significance of Pope Leo XIV’s leadership during a time of global tensions.
"He is a man who has worked for peace," the Archbishop stressed, noting that the Pope’s arrival at the Vatican coincides with active armed conflicts in various parts of the world. The expectation is not only that he will uphold doctrine but also deepen efforts to promote global peace—a crucial task in the current international landscape.
Commitment to Social Doctrine and Youth Outreach
The Yucatecan archbishop highlighted the new Pope’s strong ties to the Church’s social doctrine, an approach that could help bring the Christian message closer to younger generations.
"Bringing the message of this faith to Catholic youth worldwide will be one of his greatest challenges," Rodríguez Vega noted.
Mexican Bishops Rally Behind the New Pope
Pedro Mena Díaz, Auxiliary Bishop of Yucatán, stated that Mexican bishops trust Pope Leo XIV, as the 267th successor of Saint Peter, will faithfully guide the Church toward unity and communion in faith. He also called on the faithful:
"Let us pray that this new pontificate is guided by the Holy Spirit and strengthens the Church across the world."
The Archdiocese of Yucatán expressed hope for a Pope who embodies the heart of Jesus as a shepherd.
