Mexico City — The National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) has announced an electronic auction for land holdings in key tourist destinations across Mexico, aiming to sell the properties at the highest possible price. The initiative targets private investors, particularly in the hospitality sector, to spur economic growth in these regions.
Auction Details and Legal Framework
Fonatur stated in the Official Gazette of the Federation: “Ownership of land and water within national territory originally belongs to the Nation, which holds the right to transfer domain to private parties, thereby establishing private property.”
The electronic auction follows a standardized procedure, conducted through public bidding on a designated portal. Proposals must meet solvency requirements to ensure the state secures maximum economic benefit. The process evaluates bids based on price, quality, financing, timeliness, and other relevant factors.
Locations Included in the Auction
The lands up for auction are located in:
- Loreto and Nopoló, Baja California Sur
- Huatulco, Oaxaca
- Cancún and Cozumel, Quintana Roo
- Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Guerrero
Fonatur emphasized its mandate to acquire, subdivide, sell, lease, and manage movable and immovable assets to promote sustainable tourism development. The agency also handles promotion and advertising for these activities.
Additional Funding for Acapulco Reconstruction
Separately, Fonatur has requested 146.082 million pesos from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) to purchase vehicles for conservation and maintenance work in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez. The funds will support infrastructure recovery and improve services for domestic and international travelers.
“Conservation and maintenance efforts are critical to presenting a world-class image to visitors,” Fonatur stated.
The allocation includes:
- 143.863 million pesos for transport and cargo vehicles
- Equipment such as dump trucks, telescopic crane trucks, street lighting bucket trucks, pickup trucks, garbage collectors, and 10,000-liter water trucks
- Additional purchases of suction sweepers, hydro-pneumatic desilting equipment, and double-cab pickup trucks
Broader Economic Goals
The auction aligns with Fonatur’s broader strategy to revitalize Mexico’s tourism sector. By transferring land to private developers, the agency aims to enhance hotel capacity and attract investment in high-demand destinations.
Legal provisions require Fonatur’s leadership to ensure coordinated, efficient execution of these initiatives. The agency reiterated its commitment to transparency and maximizing returns for the state.
